The Prime Minister said: The port strength of Ba Ria – Vung Tau can make a great contribution to the development of the country, especially the Southeast when connecting seaports in the region and internationally. This is an issue that needs to be taken care of in the development vision of Ba Ria – Vung Tau and the whole country for many more coming term, while focusing on improving the prestige in the international market for shipping companies.
However, there are still many existences of the port area here such as: Inadequate and complete transport infrastructure conditions; there is no model of modern logistics centers, professional multi-modality; complete customs clearance system;… These are the shortcomings that need to be overcome soon to develop Cai Mep – Thi Vai seaport in the near future.
Regarding roads, it is necessary to soon deploy Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway, Phuoc An bridge to create favorable conditions for transporting import and export goods in and out. Regarding railways, it is necessary to study the Bien Hoa – Cai Mep railway as an extension of the North – South railway to transport goods from regions and regions to Cai Mep – Thi Vai.
At the meeting, the Prime Minister endorsed the implementation of many infrastructure projects to promote the development and more effective exploitation of the port system in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. Earlier, in the morning of March 20, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the Government delegation surveyed the Cai Mep – Thi Vai deep-water port system in Phu My town, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province.
Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster is a deep-water seaport with a length of more than 20 km. In the past year, this port cluster has reached more than 30% of the country’s container exports, which is considered to have the leading growth in the region and is expected to become the gateway to southern trade.
Despite its own competitive advantage, the port operation has been limited so far. In particular, the infrastructure connecting the port with economic centers in the Southern Key Economic Region is one of the major limitations in development. In fact, Ba Ria – Vung Tau connects with provinces in the southern and southwestern key economic regions with only National Highway 51 and frequent overcrowding.
