The Cai Mep Ha Port project, with a total investment of over 50,800 billion VND, has just kicked off, creating a large-scale logistics hub and a direct international import-export gateway.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scale and capacity to accommodate super heavy ships<\/strong>
\nOn the morning of July 1, 2026, Ho Chi Minh City officially kicked off the Cai Mep Ha General and Container Port project. This is a major maritime infrastructure project with a total investment of 50,820 billion VND, expected to become a strategic container and logistics hub, directly connecting sea routes to Europe and the US.<\/p>\n

The Cai Mep Ha Port project is being developed at the end of Route 965, adjacent to the Cai Mep – Thi Vai deep-water port cluster. With the advantage of being in an area with some of the deepest shipping channels in Southeast Asia, the port can accommodate container ships with a capacity of over 150,000 DWT.<\/p>\n

According to the detailed plan, the total area of the project is 351.2 hectares, including 229.4 hectares of land and 121.8 hectares of water surface. The pier system is designed with a total length of nearly 7 km and a capacity of 10.8 million TEUs per year. Once completed, the port will be able to receive container ships of up to 250,000 DWT, allowing businesses to export goods directly to major markets without going through intermediate transshipment ports like Singapore or Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

Investment phases and implementation progress<\/strong>
\nBefore officially starting construction, the project area was mainly marshland and local residents’ fish ponds.<\/p>\n

The project is carried out by a joint venture of investors including Geleximco Group, ITC Corp, and the State Capital Investment and Trading Corporation (SCIC). The investment is divided into several phases to optimize capital and meet market demand at different times.<\/p>\n

In phase 1, the consortium will focus on investing in two 900-meter-long piers for 250,000-ton ships and nine barge berths over 1 km long for 5,000-ton vessels. This phase will cover about 97.3 hectares of land with a total investment of nearly 14,900 billion VND, and is expected to reach a capacity of 2 million TEU per year.<\/p>\n

The consortium representatives have committed to applying green, smart, and modern port standards. The goal is to shorten transportation time, reduce logistics costs, and enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods in the international market.<\/p>\n

Multimodal infrastructure connectivity strategy<\/strong>
\nC\u00e1i M\u00e9p H\u1ea1 not only operates independently but also serves as an important link in the transport network of the southern key economic region. In the future, the port will be synchronously connected with major infrastructure projects such as:<\/p>\n

– Bi\u00ean H\u00f2a – V\u0169ng T\u00e0u Expressway
\n– Long Th\u00e0nh International Airport
\n– Th\u1ee7 Thi\u00eam – Long Th\u00e0nh Railway Line<\/p>\n

This combination creates a multimodal transport system from road, waterway to air and rail. Additionally, the project also plays a central role in Ho Chi Minh City\u2019s strategy to build a free trade zone (FTZ), providing value-added services like warehousing, container depots, and international transshipment.<\/p>\n

The initial commercial exploitation phase is expected to start in Q2 2028. The entire project will be completed by 2034, with expansion and optimization plans extending until 2045.<\/p>\n
